The solid wood doors and drawer fronts of your custom cabinetry consists of both heartwood and sapwood. Heartwood is the older, harder central portion of a tree. It is usually darker, denser and less permeable than the sapwood, which are the outside layers of the tree. Heartwood and sapwood also accept a stain differently.
